City Cleanup Week 2019: May 6-10

Attention Valley City Residents – City Cleanup May 6TH through May 10TH

Valley City will conduct its annual residential waste cleanup the week of May 6TH through May 10TH.  The free pickup and disposal is for residential waste only.

Valley City residents are encouraged to clean up, clean off, and clean out their properties.  On your regular garbage pickup day, put all your garbage, including the extra, out in your regular pick up spot by 7:00 AM, and Valley City Public Works will pick it up.  There is no limit on the number of bags, cans, boxes, etc., and no extra charge.  We will pick up general household garbage, couches, chairs, furniture, branches and wood DO NOT BAG OR BOX BRANCHES.  Paints and liquids can be disposed of in a dry, hardened form.  Cat litter, floor dry or sawdust can be used to absorb the liquid.  Empty cans can be left out with garbage. LEFTOVER PAINT WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE LANDFILL DURING CLEAN UP WEEK BUT MUST BE DRIED.

Residents may take their appliances to Truck and Auto Salvage or Valley Recycling Center. There may be a fee for refrigeration or freezing units with Freon.

The following items WILL NOT be picked up:

Leaves and grass need to be taken to the collection site at the landfill at no charge.

  • Tires must be taken to the transfer station. The disposal fee cannot be charged, cash only.
  • Batteries may be taken to the salvage yards or Valley Recycling Center.
  • Scrap metal may be taken to Valley Recycling Center.
  • Grass, leaves, yard waste

Help the garbage crews by putting the garbage into boxes, bags or cans not to exceed 32 gallons or 50 lbs.

Note:  Free disposal of grass, leaves, branches, trees, used motor oil and metal can be disposed of at the Transfer Station all year long.

Garbage Pickup during Holiday Weeks

Valley City Public Works will adjust the dates when garbage is picked up for the holidays listed below. Announcements are made on KOVC 1490 AM, through the Times-Record, and on the City of Valley City website. Transfer Station Hours & Location

Dispose of Waste & Recycling

Garbage: Each Valley City residence is entitled to either two garbage cans (up to 32 gallon size) or two plastic bags of comparable size. Lid must be removable.

Garbage should be out by 7:00 AM on your garbage pickup day.

To arrange for dumpster service or additional pick-ups, contact Public Works at 845-0380.

If residential customers, use more than two garbage cans, the additional charges will apply:

3 cans total – $5.00 total additional charge
4 cans total – $15.00 total additional charge
5 cans total – $30.00 total additional charge

Additional garbage and inert material can be disposed of at the transfer station at an established fee. Fees are listed under Solid Waste Services (Garbage) Rates.


Grass clippings: Grass clippings can be disposed of free at:

24 hour access collection site west of Transfer Station at 11490 35th St. SE. Location is marked on map.
Tree limbs, sticks: Tree limbs and sticks can be disposed of free of charge through:

Tree Limbs & Sticks Pickup can be scheduled by calling (701) 845-0380:

  • Clean-up week in May
  • The last Thursday & Friday in July
  • The last Thursday & Friday in September

Tree limbs and sticks will be picked up if:

  • Wood pile is created near the regular garbage pick-up
  • Wood size is 4” in diameter or less.
  • The pickup is scheduled by calling Public Works at 845-0380.

Animal waste: Animal waste must be placed in sealed bags before placing in cans.

Asbestos: Contact Public Works at 845-0380.

Ashes: Ashes must be placed in a closed plastic bag and set away from other garbage. Do not mix ashes with garbage. Only cold ashes will be picked up.

Car batteries: Car batteries can be recycled at Valley Recycling, 115 12th Avenue SE.

Christmas trees: City crews will pickup Christmas trees from the boulevard or the alley. All trees should have bags and stands removed for easy processing.

Construction debris: City crews will not pickup debris from home construction or remodeling. All waste generated by a contractor will be the responsibility of the contractor or occupant.

Furniture pickup: Furniture can be disposed of at the Transfer Station, 11490 35th St. SE . The following rates apply:

  • One person lift – $25.00/piece of furniture.
  • Two person lift – $35.00/piece of furniture.

Hazardous Waste: The City of Valley City has made arrangements for Valley City residents to be able to dispose of household hazardous waste in Fargo. For more information, including waste accepted and facility hours, see the Household Hazardous Waste website.

Medical waste: Medical waste including syringes and lancets can be placed into a puncture resistant container (ie, a sealed, empty detergent bottle).

Paint/paint cans: Paint/paint cans will be picked up if empty or mixed with kitty litter or saw dust to form a solid mass.

Sharp objects: Place broken glass, medical waste, sharp metal pieces, etc. into a puncture resistant container.

Televisions: TV’s can be placed on the curb for pickup for a fee of $25 for one person lift or $35 for two person lift. Flat screen TV’s can be recycled at Valley Recycling, 115 12th Avenue SE.

Trees, metal and used oil: These items can be disposed of free of charge at the Transfer Station, located at 11490 35th Street SE.

Additional garbage and inert material can be disposed of at the transfer station at an established fee.

Recycling: These items can be disposed of free of charge at Valley Recycling, located at 115 12th Avenue SE:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Flat screen TV’s
  • Glass
  • Magazines
  • Paper
  • Plastic and plastic bags
