Hi Folks,

  • Last year about this time it was dry with dust blowing everywhere and now there is a degree of subsoil moisture.  Oh, the upper Midwest and our weather changes!
  • If you have tree leaves turning a lighter green or golden earlier than normal, chlorosis could be the culprit.  If ignored, branches will die and eventually the tree can die.  Treatments are available so check with the Barnes County Agent at 701-845-8528 or the Valley City Forester at 701-845-1700 for advice.
  • There were great numbers of fireworks detonated over the extended 4th of July weekend.  Many folks have done a great job picking-up debris though there is still a good amount remaining.  Will you please clean up streets and yards around you?  Thank you and I hope you all had fun.
  • I am still encouraging football officiating!  The “Gridiron Tune-up” is a football officials’ workshop in Williston August 16 (3PM start) & 17 with classroom and on-field experiences.  There is an August 1st deadline for registration and special room rates are available.  Please contact Mike Gunderson at 701-339-2726 or md.gunner@hotmail.com.
  • Clean-up Week is a great service for us and this year about 289.47 tons of material were gathered.  Thank you to all our Public Works folks.  A couple things got out-of-hand so a little adjustment will be made next year.
  • “People will go where they are invited, but will stay where they feel welcome”.  ~ A Friend.    Please make people feel welcome here.
  • Due to rain and very hard work, personal and community gardens are looking so nice & plush.  The sad news is, people are stealing produce and vandalizing gardens.  Some years gardens produce so well, owners may share some produce if asked, but stealing produce is just WRONG!  How about a “neighborhood watch”?  “If  you see something, say something”, call VCPD at 845-3110.  Thank you.

CITY ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT

City Administrator Crawford asked Operations Supervisor Klemisch to give an update on the rain and the increased water releases on the river. The level should remain at about 9.5’ but his crew is preparing for 11’ just to be safe. You will see pumps running & culverts plugged as needed.

City Administrator Crawford explained that the City of Valley City recognizes Juneteenth as a Holiday but we do not observe it. The City follows North Dakota State’s guidelines. Discussion on After Hours is still in the works. We are currently trying to work with Barnes County Dispatch. Budget discussion has started. Working with the Department Heads on the Capital Improvement Plans as well as the 10 Year Master Plan.

Deputy Auditor Johnson gave an update on the Election. The County will do the canvassing on June 24th. We have reached out to the newly elected with information on the Oaths.

Police Chief Horner shared the great turn out for Community Days and Thank You to all that planned and worked the events. Special Thanks to his Officers for the extra time involved. 

Engineer Petersen gave an update on the Construction happening around town.

Engineer Eslinger updated the Commission on the Service Line Inventory has been accepted by the Department of Environmental Quality. There will be a Public Notice coming later this summer.

Mayor Carlsrud thanked the Commissioners for their service. He shared how great the Community Days Events went and all the people that were in attendance. Thank you to all the individuals that assisted with the planning and carrying out of the all the events throughout town. Special thanks to the City Employees who assisted as well. Stop by and check out the artwork posted by the Sheyenne Valley Vocational Center that is hanging on the wall in the Chamber, very nice work.

Hello Everyone,

  • July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.  Since 1980 the titles “Independence Day” and “Fourth of July” are both utilized to identify the event’s celebration.
  • The week of the Fourth is a festive time with family gatherings, food and fireworks.  Fireworks explosions are dangerous, from losing fingers, eyesight and even death so be safe.  Please be respectful of your neighbors by detonating at reasonable times and cleaning all debris from your fireworks.
  • Fireworks detonation times are July 1, 2 & 3, 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM with July 4th being 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM and July 5th being 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.  Enjoy and be SAFE.
  • Summer goes so fast, gosh, we are nearing the fall sports season already with players, coaches and game officials in their early stages of preparation for her/his sport of choice.  
  • Last week I was privileged to work at the Sioux Empire Football Officials’ Clinic.  There were about 75 campers from nine different states who attended the Sioux Falls clinic.  Officials from Valley City and other North Dakota communities were there taking part in two days of classroom presentations and on-field officiating overseen by high school, college and NFL clinicians.
  • My profession was working with the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA).  The NDHSAA is located in Valley City and is the service organization of North Dakota’s member schools.  Some responsibilities are administering eligibility, providing rules clinics and administering the fine arts & sports region and state tournaments.  My purpose for sharing the aforementioned is, to have fine arts and sports competitions, judges and game officials are needed.  Because, “Without officials, they’re just scrimmages”!
  • Why consider officiating?  It is an opportunity to “give back”, it is a competition, it is physical fitness, you will network and realize lifelong friendships.  Please contact the NDHSAA at 845-3953 or ndhsaa.com.  Try it, you may love it.

Hi All,

  • Last Thursday you may have observed the Summer Solstice which is when the sun is at its northernmost point and produces the day with maximum sunshine of the summer.  Watch for September 22 as it is the Autumnal Equinox when we have 12 hours each of light and dark followed by December 21, the Winter Solstice, the opposite of the Summer Solstice.  Enjoy the events.
  • Be aware of freshly planted grass in construction areas, please don’t walk or drive on it.  There are also areas where there is no curb with grass next to the road, please stay off those areas when wet as your vehicle will sink in the mud and repairs are expensive.
  • Last week I had the pleasure of visiting with people from Texas, Ohio and California who were touring Valley City.  They were all interested in and very complimentary of the parks, views and overall beauties of our town. 
  • Sometimes I am guilty of seeing all the things we want to repair, upgrade, remove, etc., and I forget to step back a moment to, “smell the roses” and appreciate all the wonderful things we have here.  We are Blessed.
  • Would you like to serve your community; it is gratifying.  Currently there is an opening on each of three committees:  Renaissance Zone, Planning & Zoning and Visitors Committee.  Please give it some thought and for further information e-mail Judi at jhintz@valleycity.us.
  • I have noticed more vehicles yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks, thank you.  If you normally don’t allow pedestrians to cross first, please consider doing so.  “Being courteous is contagious, catch it”!
  • When was the last time you visited the Barnes County Museum or the Valley City Barnes County Library?  Wes always has something “cook’n” at the museum and the library is one of three basically unaltered Carnegie Libraries in North Dakota.  Both places are special and for folks of all ages.
