Important Notice Regarding Electric Rates

To account for rising costs from power providers, the City of Valley City will adjust electric rates effective July 2, 2026. This change was approved by the Board of City Commissioners on May 4, 2026 (Resolution 2525).

As shown in Graph A below, approximately 50% of Valley City’s electric expenses come from purchased power, supplied by MRES and Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). In 2025/2026, WAPA will increase its rates by 14% due to their operations and maintenance costs. In addition, MRES Power Supply has increased its rates by 5% in 2025, 4.7% in 2026, and project a 4.4% annual increase for 2027-2030.

Despite significant rate increases from our providers, the City has committed to only increasing overall electric rates by 2%. Even with this adjustment, Valley City continues to maintain some of the lowest electric rates in the tri-state area as shown in Graph B.

NEWS & NOTES

10/7/2024

          Hello Folks,

  • “Thank you, Governor Burgum,” for your proclamation supporting Public Power Week October 6-12.
  • Valley City Parks and Recreation (VCPR) hosted the “Parktober Festival” Saturday.  There was food, sand volleyball, pumpkins, a fun run along with fun games of skill for kids and adults.  Kudos to VCPR staff members who did a great job of holding things together in the wind.
  • Speaking of VCPR, with physical activity being great for good mental health, our parks are in great shape now with disc golf, pickleball and updated playground equipment.  Go out and enjoy the nice fall colors and weather.
  • Valley City is a great place to live:  https://www.developvcbc.com/
  • At a meeting generated through the State Department of Commerce a plethora of  community topics were discussed.  One being needs and replacements of our school buildings, some of which are in the 100-year old range.  It will “take a village” to make it happen for our kids and grandkids, let’s do it!
  • Flu and COVID Vaccinations are available now, check with your medical provider.
  • * Measure #4, a constitutional measure, would eliminate property taxes if passed.  While that sounds great, there are many funding consequences without solutions for all of us so be diligent in studying both sides of the measure.  Biennially the legislature would need to squeeze approximately $3.15 B from a $12.2 B General Fund Budget to replace said property tax funding.  Fire & police departments, health care, Parks & Rec, roads, schools and infrastructure to name a few places from which funds can be taken by the legislature.  *Defeating Measure #4 would allow local control over your tax dollars rather than the state legislature controlling your dollars and inspire legislators with the importance of property tax reform.  Be educated on both sides of the measures, be an informed voter.
  • Thank you to all who provide and proof material for this article.
  • God put us here to prepare this place for the next generation.  That’s our job. Raising children and helping the community, that’s preparing for the next generation.”  ~ Dikembe Mutombo
  • Blessings, Pray, be Grateful and Respectful,

Dave

 NEWS & NOTES

10/9/2023

  • Hi Folks,
  • Last week I mentioned the reliability of Municipal Power; our power was “on” .99998 of the time during September.  You might be surprised to know squirrels are the greatest cause of outages!
  • This is National Fire Prevention Week, and its theme is “Cooking Safety Starts With YOU.  Pay Attention to Fire Prevention”.  Look through your homes to identify possible fire hazards and have your fire extinguishers inspected at our Fire Hall.
  • Our Fire Department Personnel will be promoting fire safety with department tours and informative sessions around town throughout the week.  This year, our Volunteer Firefighters logged 3348 man hours of firefighter training!  Thank Volunteer Fire Fighters, their families and their employers.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday is the “Battle of the Badges” blood drive at Stout-Miller Inc., Dodge & Ford dealerships on Winter Show Road.  Call Vitalant for an appointment at: 877-258-4825.
  • Mental Health Awareness Week in Barnes County kicked off with an “Out of the Darkness Walk” for Suicide Prevention at Lokken Field Sunday afternoon.  There was a touching program and 124 walkers participated in this 1 of 500 walks across the country.  “Facing a struggle is a strength not a weakness”.
  • PURPLE streetlights?  We are not alone; it is a factory defect and is all over the country.  The company is standing behind the product to date so we can be grateful.
  • School bus drivers are needed to transport students to classes and activities.  Licensure & training is available through Dietrich Bus Service in Valley City.  This is a critical need for our schools and community so please call 701-845-1590.  Thank you for your consideration.
  • Recently there have been numerous cigarette wrappers and drink containers thrown on our streets.  Will you please hold your trash until you can dispose of it properly?  Thank you.
  • Thanks to all who provide and proof material for this article.
  • If Jack Nicklaus had to play my tee shots, he couldn’t break 80.  He’d be a pharmacist with a string of drug stores in Ohio.”    ~ Lee Trevino

1.2.2022 Mayor’s Message

Hello Folks,

  • Proof that “time heals”, I don’t remember the last time we had so much snow in one storm.  Depending from where your reading comes, it seems we had 18-20 inches of snow.  The nice part is, it makes for a beautiful scene in our part of the Sheyenne Valley.
  • The snow did make for some challenges of course.  Our Public Works Crews had to wait for the storm to subside before snow removal could be effective.  We didn’t get out of our driveway Monday and with the longer duration of the storm; our garbage is waiting to be picked up.
  • Puppy “poop” is easily seen in the white snow, please pick up your pet’s waste.
  • Kudos to our Public Works Crews as once snow removal began it was “all hands on deck”.  Workers jumped in and worked wherever needed be it hauling snow, sanding or plowing.  Once they began, long hours were worked and the city was pretty well cleaned in about forty hours, running time.
  • Over the weekend I went for a couple walks, warm clothes were needed, and I want to say thanks to all of you who have cleaned your sidewalks and driveways.  It makes walking easier and much safer for mail carriers and delivery people so if you haven’t cleaned yours, please do. Please remember to check your sewer vents.
  • VCPS and VCSU have fine arts and athletic competitions during this time of winter.  Get out and watch the kids compete; it is warm in the venues.
  • Thank you to contributors again this week.
  • “All you need is love; but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”  (Charles Schulz) Blessings, Respect, Kindness and Prayers,

Dave
